• Personal Sabbath Update

Allow me the opportunity to provide a personal update of my first three weeks of taking a Sabbath. While recording this update here provides me an opportunity to reflect on my experience, my primary goal is to encourage others as I record my own thoughts in a journal. I am taking this opportunity to provide an update because I am approximately halfway through this journey to discover and employ a Sabbath in my life. My first post on the need for rest was in late February and I will finish reading my first book on Sabbath at the end of June. Thus, this is about the midpoint and is a…

  • Rhythm

Rhythm. What comes to mind when you hear that word? For some it will be music. For others it will be nature. For others it may be life itself. And the reality is that all of those answers are correct – and, in one sense, the same. As I focus on the idea of Sabbath during this season, I am reading a book to help guide my thoughts and give me ideas. The book that I am reading is called Sabbath: Finding Rest, Renewal, and Delight in Our Busy Lives. It was written by Wayne Muller. Some who read this book may be turned off because it is not truly…

  • Remember the Sabbath

Can you name the Ten Commandments? In order? Don’t worry, I am not going to ask you to confess whether you did or not. The truth is that many people (particularly Christians) talk about the Commandments, but that doesn’t mean that they know them. But here is something I bet many people who know a few of the Commandments will know. What are the first two words of most of the Ten Commandments. “You shall…” Of the ten, eight start with “You shall…” Seven of those eight begin with “You shall not…” The eighth says “You shall have no…” which has the same effective meaning.* The other two are: Honor…

  • Slowing Down the STEPS Toward Sabbath

“There is more to life than merely increasing its speed.” Gandhi How appropriate those words are! And they were spoken decades ago before the pace of life began to accelerate even further. Of course, now, in the midst of the current COVID-19 pandemic, life has slowed down in many ways for many people. For some, the pace has come to a halt. While my pace has not slowed down yet, I continue to make progress toward that goal. Lord willing, on Saturday (the day after this post is published), I will realize my first Sabbath. In fact, it will be my first day without working since January 13, 2019 (over…

  • When Strategy and Sabbath Overlap

“Culture eats strategy for breakfast.” – Peter Drucker Well, the coronavirus has impacted our culture greatly and thus impacted many plans and strategies along the way. The Bible says a great deal about making plans. A few examples would be: The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps. – Proverbs 16.9 Commit your work to the Lord and your plans will be established. – Proverbs 16.3 Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit” – yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What…
